Foods to try in Georgia

Updated: Feb 8, 2020

Here are some of the recipes we tried when visited Georgia (country). Probably you may wonder, why most of the food is cheesy. Trust me, in Georgia, cheesy food is the real highlight. I am a person who always prefers spicy food, but Georgian cuisine was phenomenal which blown my mind.

There is one thing which you may face while going to restaurants. That is, most people don’t know English and you may struggle a bit sometimes to convey things.

Let's get to the point.

1. Khachapuri

It is a boat-shaped bread stuffed with different kinds of cheese (pure) and an egg in the center. There are different variations of Khachapuri available. However, the below one is something I loved the most, which is called Khachapuri-adjaruli. I had it literally every single day, at least once when we were in Georgia. I was not a cheese lover prior to visiting Tbilisi. But after tasting their cheese, my whole attitude towards cheese turned upside down.

2. Khinkali ( Georgian dumplings )

We have seen a variety of dumplings from Middleeast countries and India as well. Khinkali is a Georgian dumpling which is a favorite dish in the region. The most popular filling is a lamb/pork/beef mix. In addition to minced meat, it contains onions, chili pepper, salt, and cumin. It's very juicy inside, hence sip the juice inside prior to eating it. It's a must-try recipe.

3. Kubdari

People from other countries may think that it’s a pizza. It's a flat-bread stuffed with lamb/beef/pork meat with Georgian spices and onion which is the national dish of the Svaneti region. Its a must-try for meat lovers.

4. Chashushuli- Ostri ( Spicy Georgian beef stew )

Oh my god! It's very tasty. This is one of the recipes I had which features the unique spices of Georgia. The stew is typically made with a combination of beef (sometimes veal or pork), tomatoes, onions, water or meat broth, mushrooms, garlic, and a generous amount of spices and herbs such as basil, chili pepper, parsley, fenugreek, summer savory, and bay leaves, yielding a highly aromatic and flavor-packed dish. It's a real gem for spicy-food lovers.

5. Achma

The first day when we landed in Tbilisi, we decided to go for dinner in a fine dining restaurant. My whole agenda was to try Georgian cheese and I ordered Achma. It's a type of cheese lasagna found in Adjara and Abkhazia regions. It has a crisp top crust with several layers of tender cheese inside. It's a mouth-watering delight for cheese lovers.

6. Khachapuri on Spin

It's another version of cheesy Khachapuri that we found in Borjomi. We ordered it because we loved the Georgian cheese. It has a crust of bread which a whole lot of cheese inside. You may not find this version of Khachapuri in other parts Georgia, but it’s absolutely fine and I always recommend adjaruli instead of this.

7. Cheese Mushroom Omelette

After a lot of cheesy meals, we decided to have a simple breakfast. This is a simple dish with cheese, mushroom, eggs and parsley leaves. Omelette and Coffee. It was yummy!

8. Georgian Wine

Good news wine lovers!

This is something you should not miss from trying. Georgia is famous for its authentic wine preparation. Kakheti region is famous for wineries and the grape harvest in wine-yards is exciting to watch. I would say, wine in Georgia is super cheap. We even bought a few bottles and we didn’t face any issues in boarding with it.

9. Georgian Craft Beer

Craft beers in Georgia are very popular and have superior quality. Beer is available in a small grocery as well and is super cheap compared to the prices in developed countries. Every restaurant serves beer and wine along with their authentic cuisines. Cheers!
